Sensei Sam at Yushukan Applied Karate is fantastic. My daughter has been doing Karate with Sensei Sam since she was 6.5 and has grown so much. My son has watched his sister learn karate and at 5.5 has now joined in the fun. It has helped with focus. I am working on confidence and assertiveness with my daughter and after speaking to Sensei he has happily and easily incorporated more confidence and assertiveness into each session.

Having trained in martial arts in my 20s and 30s, turning 60 this year saw me searching for a new martial art for my physical and mental well-being. After lots of time searching on line I found Sensei Sam’s Yushukan Applied Karate teaching Goju Ryu, a Japanese style. I have been very happy with Sensei’s teaching of Goju Ryu. The other students made me very welcome and assisted in my transition to this new martial art. Today after two months of training I passed my first grading in Yushukan Goju Ryu and look for to progressing my skills and well-being through my training in Yushukan Applied Karate.

My kids and I joined Yushukan Applied Karate as a family activity to improve fitness, focus and spend time together. We started in early 2022 and immediately felt comfortable at the Tweed Heads South Dojo with Sensei Sam and Sempai Luke. We enjoy the traditional style of Goju Ryu karate that Sensei Sam teaches and always feel comfortable discussing techniques and asking questions. We attend 1-2 classes a week and have all noticed an improvement in our fitness, especially core strength, and our focus. We love the variety of the lessons and have become more confident in our ability to use our karate for self-defence. We can’t wait for our next grading!

Sam is an excellent Sensei. He is thorough and holistic in his approach. By that I mean he builds confidence in the physical movement and patterns which are Karate and couples them with the ethos, spirit and disipline which is the other equally, if not more important aspect of karate.
