Because of subsequent events, It was a bit like WW3 for me when I joined Tumut Aero Club on 12th October 1980. The Club had a wonderful Blanik Aluminium sailplane that could be flown and was flown by anybody and despite it's beautiful condition couldn't get itself washed. Not many helpers then.
There were chalk and cheese brothers Terry & Rod Venables. The former, one of the nicest guys and greatest bush plumbers you'd ever want to meet, with a lovely wife called Val and the latter a pilot flying an Airtug just like Mad Max himself, as he thought he was.

Rod had a mate who flew several people to their horrendous end (Scone Aerodrome I believe?) doing frightening stunts at very low altitude that pressed your face against the fuselage. I should know, he did it to me one afternoon, many thanks to Rod) A power stall turn I believe.

Tumut Aero Club had a beautiful Aeroplane, an Auster which it mainly used as a Tow plane, and that an enthusiast purchased and renovated only to meet his end crashing it I was told, Peter somebody I believe. Another nice guy from out of Tumut. I remember having to wipe some of the oil from my windscreen as the beautiful Auster pulled me up up and away with Terry Venables at the Auster's controls. A lovely aeroplane. And Terry a very good pilot.

Danny O'Sullivan taught a 34 year old Telecom technician to put an end to the beautiful Blanik which was replaced by an identical model looking 120 years older. More later!

Some silly pilot who had careful ways suggested a small Co-Payment by members to purchase a single seat plane to enrich the club only to find that all were willing to fly any such machine, but almost none were interested in paying for it.

And so the IS 29 came to Tumut, for a short time. A beautiful aeroplane from Romania paid for by 3 members in a club where 29 members wanted to fly it, many unqualified to and the rest too mean to contribute. And so, just like concorde, the IS 29 left, for Perth in the West.

Thankfully we only lost one trainee glider pilot at Tumut while I was there, 1980/1986 and I was a little ashamed to join in at a guard of honour at his funeral because I rather liked the guy. I felt so sorry that he had thought and had been encouraged that it was possible that one can learn to fly a Sailplane within a week. He was so sadly and tragically misled. God bless him.
