Girl Guiding at Maitland was an important part of my life in the 1950s, which, of course, means I was a Guide during the 100-year flood of 1955. Our Guide Hall was on the banks of the Hunter River so it ended up filled with about 2 metres of mud once the water subsided. We all helped to clear it out, and our Friday night meetings resumed. I was the Patrol Leader of the Rosella Patrol and went on to be the first Queen's Guide in the Hunter Valley. That was very special for it gave me the honour of welcoming the Founder's wife, Lady Baden Powell, on her first visit to Australia. So now, as I approach my 80th birthday, I'm writing a story about the wonderful experiences I had as a Girl Guide, and it all started at 1st Maitland (St Mary's) company more than 70 years ago!
