Food - excellent, definitely not bland nor salty or oily as per some of the recent reviews I read. Kids of our friends are not easy to please when it comes to food and to see them helping themselves to the array of food and have 3rd helpings are proof that the food served at Istana is scrumptious.

Service - friendly, attentive and helpful. It was a full house turnout and yet the wait for food was quick and food was served warm. Again, contrary to the reviews I read.

Atmosphere -

old school, the way we like it. Non-pretentious and clean.

Best Hainanese chicken in Sydney in my opinion. Curry fish head was great but not amazing. Could use more spices.
Meals are a little bit on the pricey side but the portion is very big.

This place has been around for a long time and is famous for its Hainan Chicken Rice.
Both the Chicken and Rice is well cooked and we usually order half or whole chicken that comes with all you can eat Chicken Rice.
Pipi's are usually large and fried in a great tasting XO sauce.
The durian ice cream is also well worth a mention. Creamy and pungent !
Other foods here meet the standard but are not outstanding.
The prices here though are a bit on the expensive side.

CHARGED $21 FOR TEA FOR 7 PPL WITHOUT EXPLAINING IT COSTS $3 PER PERSON WHEN ASKING WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO DRINK. Also added $15 to an already expensive $38 sweet n sour fish dish (making it $53) without explaining that it will cost extra to deep fry the fish (they just said 'yeah we can do that' without adding it will cost more).

The bill came to abt $25 per person AFTER their 5% off for paying cash. And that's with 2 kids, 2 teens & 3 adults.

The staff were v friendly & the food excellent (esp their Hainan chicken rice & crispy deep fried shredded beef) albeit pricey, but for keeping customers they should warn people first of extra costs so as not to p*ss them off at the end. We used to come more often in the past & had not been for awhile but the bill shock has turned us off recommending this place or going back.

This is a Malaysian eatery with a touch of Chinese influence. The dishes are generally mild in flavor and are mostly served warm (instead of hot). The portions are quite generous, which justifies the pricing. Keep in mind the size of the portions when ordering.

I've come here several times over the years. Food is usually good quality although I would recommend sticking with the Malaysian dishes over the Chinese. We used to love it but sadly the value for money has really gone downhill 😥

Went there for dinner tonight and wanted to get nasi lemak but enough for three people to share. Asked the waitress if we could ditch the rice and get more of everything else (chicken curry, nuts, anchovies, cucumber etc) and get a large rice on the side instead. Tried explaining three times but she couldn't understand as her English wasn't good so the boss came over. He effectively said no and that we would have to get the menu version as is with the rice and ask if we wanted more of anything as we were eating it which was very frustrating. Not having a sharing sized portion version on the menu or allowing people to customise it is poor customer service, if you need to charge more fine but let the customers have what they want.

When it did come out the amount of chicken curry was miniscule, for the standard menu price I'd expect twice or even three times as much. Chicken is not expensive. Same thing with the beef rendang we had the previous time we came. The amount you get for the price is crazy when the dish actually calls for using cheaper cuts of meat.

Paid $140 for three people which is a lot when you aren't ordering any seafood or drinks.

Sad as we used to love this place so hopefully that side of things improves over time, as is can't see myself going back.
