Our daughter has been with SYO for four years. She progressed from stage1 to stage 2 but did not manage to get on to stage 3 after staying in stage 2 for 2 years. We were frustrated and she did not want to spend another year on stage 2. The SYO panel refused to reconsider her with the reason that Level 3 is very competitive and even thought she was very close to moving to stage 3 but they noted a few technical and musical concerns. However, they never explain to us what exact those are after we wrote back offering them to work with her violin teacher to improve her skills. We left 2 or 3 messages and at the end, a cold-hearted decline email from James who is the head of Orchestral training. I have been to a few SYO showcases and I have listened to Stage 3 performance. I am confident that my daughter will not have any issue playing those songs. Anyway, maybe everything SYO did was right, may be our daughter does not deserve to go to stage 3 as she hardly practices her SYO songs when she was in stage 2.

All in all, it is very cruel for my daughter. I strongly suggest parents who want to put their kids to this program consider whether this is suitable for them, so they don't end up getting a result like us.

My boys have thrived under the gentle guidance of the tutors and the conductors. I love how the conductors encourage all children and don’t single out anyone. I also love how all the children are all rotated equally around the orchestra so they all have a chance to experience different sections and different sounds. It’s wonderul to see other kids who love music mingling together every week and an absolute delight to see how much progress they make at the end of each term.

SYO has incredibly helpful staff and provides great opportunities for young musicians all across Sydney and NSW! The quality of music provided is high and brings accessible music and concerts to people throughout the area. Would highly recommend.

Sydney Youth Orchestras staff are super helpful and their ensembles are a joy to watch. It is so important you youth to experience this kind of music education.
